President William Ruto’s allies are increasingly expressing concern over former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s growing involvement in opposition politics ahead of the 2027 General Election.
According to reports, Uhuru’s perceived political influence, financial muscle, and expansive networks have sent jitters across the Kenya Kwanza camp as they strategize for re-election.
Leaders allied to the government, including those in the broad-based arrangement, have openly urged the former Head of State to retire from active politics, accusing him of interfering with the current administration.
The tensions can be traced back to the bitter fallout during the 2022 General Election, when Uhuru abandoned his then-deputy William Ruto and backed former ODM leader Raila Odinga for the presidency.
Ruto’s allies now claim that Uhuru is sponsoring opposition activities and working behind the scenes to frustrate the government’s development agenda.
Despite leaving office, Uhuru is believed to retain strong grassroots networks capable of mobilising significant political support for a preferred candidate, a factor seen as a potential threat to Ruto’s 2027 re-election bid.
Political analysts further suggest that a possible rapprochement between Uhuru and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua could significantly reshape the country’s politics. Such an alliance, they argue, could weaken Ruto’s influence in the Mt Kenya region.
