Anxiety is reportedly mounting within President William Ruto’s Cabinet amid fears of an impending reshuffle that could see several Cabinet Secretaries dismissed.
According to a report by Taita Leo, at least four CSs who joined the government following a political pact with the late opposition leader Raila Odinga are at risk of losing their positions due to alleged poor performance.
The report cites Article 152 of the Constitution, which grants the President powers to dismiss Cabinet Secretaries. Article 152(5) states that the office of a Cabinet Secretary becomes vacant if the holder is dismissed by the President.
The paper adds that the agreement between President Ruto and Raila Odinga does not contain any clause restricting the President from removing appointed ministers.
Those reportedly on the chopping block include CSs Wycliffe Oparanya, John Mbadi, Opiyo Wandayi, and Hassan Joho.
The four were appointed in July 2024 at the height of Gen-Z-led protests and were sworn into office in August.
Their appointment followed a political truce between President Ruto and Odinga, which helped quell nationwide demonstrations against the Finance Bill 2024.
However, recent protests have seen criticism directed at some of the CSs, particularly Mbadi and Wandayi, who were accused of failing to demonstrate leadership and expertise in resolving disputes involving matatu operators.
