Karen Nyamu Claims ‘Linda Mwananchi’ Movement Is Funded From Outside ODM

Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu has sparked fresh political debate after alleging that the Linda Mwananchi faction within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is not a genuine grassroots outfit but a project backed by external forces.

In a strongly worded statement, Nyamu dismissed the existence of the movement as an independent political force, claiming it is instead linked to former president Uhuru Kenyatta.

According to her, the faction is being financed from outside the party, framing it as a strategic attempt to influence ODM’s internal direction.

Her remarks come at a time when the party associated with veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga is experiencing visible internal divisions.

The Linda Mwananchi wing has attracted several high-profile leaders, including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Siaya Governor James Orengo, and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, among others.

Nyamu questioned the motives behind the alleged backing, suggesting that if the claims are true, the movement could be part of a broader political strategy rather than an organic reform push within ODM.

She went further to challenge the choice of leaders associated with the faction, hinting that alternative figures could have been supported instead.

The controversy highlights the growing tensions within ODM as competing factions position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Analysts say the emergence of rival camps risks weakening the party’s cohesion at a critical moment when coalition politics is expected to shape the national contest.

Nyamu’s claims, however, remain unverified, and no concrete evidence has been publicly presented to substantiate the allegation.

Neither Kenyatta nor leaders linked to the Linda Mwananchi faction have issued official responses addressing the accusations.

Observers note that if such claims gain traction, they could further complicate efforts to unify the party and rebuild a common agenda.

The suggestion of external influence in ODM’s internal affairs adds a new dimension to the already complex political landscape.
