Catherine Omanyo Admits Strain of ODM Role Amid Mounting Party Pressures

Newly appointed Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General Catherine Omanyo has publicly opened up about the personal and political pressures she is facing, revealing the demanding nature of her new position within one of Kenya’s leading opposition parties.

Speaking during a recent address to supporters, the Busia Woman Representative did not hold back her emotions, candidly stating, “I am tired,” as she highlighted the weight of expectations and responsibilities that have come with her elevation to the influential role.

Omanyo’s remarks offer a rare glimpse into the behind-the-scenes challenges of managing a party navigating internal divisions and national political expectations.

Her frustration appeared to be directed not only at the workload but also at how her leadership has been portrayed in the media.

She criticised what she described as a narrow focus on individual personalities rather than broader party issues, suggesting that such coverage undermines her efforts to steer ODM toward unity and strategic clarity.

Omanyo assumed the role of Secretary General following the controversial removal of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, a move that intensified tensions within the party.

Since then, ODM—long associated with veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga—has been grappling with internal disagreements, factional alignments, and the challenge of maintaining cohesion ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Political observers note that her remarks reflect the broader strain within ODM as it attempts to redefine its identity in a shifting political landscape.

The emergence of rival factions and ongoing debates over leadership direction have added to the complexity of her role.

Despite the challenges, Omanyo signaled her intention to refocus the party’s agenda away from internal disputes and toward its core mission.

Analysts suggest that her ability to manage competing interests within ODM will be critical in determining the party’s strength in future electoral contests.

Her candid admission underscores the human side of political leadership, particularly within high-stakes environments where expectations are high and scrutiny is constant.
