“Unacceptable” Khalwale Slams Energy CS Wandayi for Absence from Critical Session

Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has publicly criticized Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi following his absence from a crucial parliamentary committee session.

The session, which was scheduled to discuss pressing issues affecting Kenya’s energy sector, reportedly saw the CS fail to attend without providing prior notice or explanation.

Senator Khalwale expressed frustration over the absence, emphasizing that it undermines parliamentary oversight and accountability. “It is unacceptable for a Cabinet Secretary to ignore a committee summons.

Kenyans deserve transparency, especially on matters affecting their electricity bills and energy policies,” Khalwale said during a press briefing.

The parliamentary committee was set to review ongoing energy projects, including renewable energy initiatives, fuel supply strategies, and infrastructure maintenance.

Members of the committee had expected the Energy CS to provide updates on government plans, clarify expenditure on key projects, and answer questions raised by legislators.

Khalwale noted that such absences delay legislative scrutiny and could negatively impact policy implementation.

He urged CS Wandayi to respect parliamentary processes and appear in subsequent sessions to address outstanding concerns.

“The committee has a mandate to hold the ministry accountable. No one is above scrutiny, not even Cabinet Secretaries,” Khalwale added.

Observers say the incident reflects broader tensions between the executive and legislative branches over oversight and governance.

Citizens and industry stakeholders have echoed Khalwale’s concerns, pointing out that consistent engagement by government officials is critical for effective decision-making and public trust.

As the energy sector continues to play a pivotal role in Kenya’s economic growth, Senator Khalwale’s comments underscore the importance of accountability and timely reporting by government officials.

The parliamentary committee has since scheduled a follow-up session, with expectations that CS Wandayi will honor the invitation and provide full briefings on all pending energy matters.
