Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa Speaks Out On Kikuyu Police Operations During DCP Rally

Senator Karungo wa Thang'wa has strongly criticised the conduct of police officers during recent confrontations in Kikuyu, accusing security agencies of using excessive force against civilians.

In a statement issued on Saturday evening, Thang’wa alleged that the police response during the incident was disproportionate, claiming that residents who had turned out to participate in a political gathering were subjected to unnecessary force.

The Senator condemned what he described as rogue actions by sections of the police, saying such conduct undermines public trust and threatens the country’s democratic space.

He argued that law enforcement officers should prioritise the protection of citizens rather than engage in actions that escalate tensions.

Thang’wa also took aim at National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah, accusing him of relying on state machinery rather than genuine public support.

He questioned the decision to deploy heavy police presence in an area where residents had gathered for a political event.

According to the Senator, the situation worsened even after crowds had begun dispersing, with claims that some officers continued to pursue and harass individuals.

He further alleged that live rounds were fired, raising concerns about the safety of civilians caught up in the confrontation.

The remarks come in the wake of heightened political tension in parts of Kiambu County, where clashes between police and sections of the public have been reported.

Authorities have yet to issue a detailed response to the allegations raised, but security agencies have maintained that their actions are aimed at preserving law and order during public gatherings.

Thang’wa called for accountability and urged relevant authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly, stressing the need to safeguard citizens’ rights during political activities.
