Siaya Senator and ODM leader Dr. Oburu Oginga Odinga firmly dismissed viral rumours about his health and alleged disappearance, prompting political analyst Prof. Peter Kagwanja to offer context on the motivations behind the veteran politician’s swift rebuttal.
Speaking in Kisumu on Friday, May 8, 2026, the 82-year-old Oburu appeared relaxed and cheerful as he addressed the public directly.
“I was not abducted. I’m not sick. I’m quite okay,” he stated, thanking Kenyans for their concern while revealing he had been actively steering ODM party affairs behind the scenes and even enjoying a round of golf.
His absence from recent high-profile ODM events, including a party retreat in Mombasa, had fueled intense speculation on social media, with unverified claims suggesting he was critically ill, possibly receiving treatment abroad.
Prof. Peter Kagwanja, a prominent political commentator and CEO of the Africa Policy Institute, weighed in on the episode, describing Oburu’s rebuttal as a strategic move to stabilize the party and counter malicious narratives.
According to Kagwanja, in the post-Raila Odinga era, ODM faces heightened scrutiny and internal dynamics.
Viral health rumours about aging opposition figures often serve as tools for political destabilization, especially ahead of key by-elections or realignments.
“Oburu’s quick response is not just personal reassurance but a party statement,” Kagwanja noted in recent analyses.
“It signals continuity and resilience at a time when opponents are testing the Orange party’s unity.”
The rumours gained traction after an ODM official reportedly mentioned Oburu was on bedrest following medical advice, sparking a wave of concern mixed with political gossip.
Some sections of the opposition allegedly amplified the claims to portray ODM leadership as fragile.
Oburu’s re-emergence, complete with visuals of him active in Kisumu, effectively quashed the speculation.
Party officials, including youth leaders, reinforced the message, assuring supporters that the senator remains “very okay” and fully engaged.
Emmaculate Wandia, a political commentator and analyst based Kuria, in Migori county. She alluded that Oburu lacks the influence to lead the ODM party unlike his late brother Raila Odinga, who could handle and manage the party leadership and governance.
