Gaucho Alleges Raila Odinga Paid Him KSh 250k Monthly after Stopping US Relocation

Political activist Calvince Okoth, popularly known as Gaucho, has claimed that veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga once placed him on a monthly salary of KSh 250,000 after discouraging him from relocating to the United States.

Speaking during an interview on Obinna TV, Gaucho shared details about what he described as a close working relationship with the ODM leader.

He alleged that Raila intervened when he was planning to move abroad after securing an opportunity in Minnesota.

According to Gaucho, the opportunity came at a difficult time when he feared for his safety following anti government demonstrations and political activities in the country.

He explained that before making the final decision, he consulted Raila, who strongly advised him against leaving Kenya.

Gaucho further claimed that Ida Odinga also encouraged him to remain in the country instead of relocating to the US.

The activist alleged that Raila later brought him into the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation (JOOF), where he began receiving financial support.

He said the ODM leader first asked him about his monthly expenses before allegedly offering him KSh 250,000 every month.

According to Gaucho, Raila believed he had potential to serve in leadership and promised to help him secure a role either in government or Nairobi County in future.

He also claimed that several other young political loyalists and activists associated with Raila benefited from similar support arrangements.

Gaucho’s remarks have generated widespread reactions online, with many Kenyans debating the role senior politicians play in supporting grassroots mobilisers and political activists.

During the interview, the activist also addressed criticism surrounding his appointment to the board of Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital.

He denied allegations that he was seeking personal benefits through politics.

He explained that he initially hesitated to accept the appointment before Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja allegedly persuaded him to take up the role.

Gaucho claimed Sakaja informed him the appointment was part of plans Raila had already discussed before his death.

The revelations have sparked fresh discussions about political patronage, loyalty, and mentorship within Kenya’s political landscape.

Gaucho became widely known through grassroots activism and youth mobilisation, especially during periods of heightened political activity in the country.

His outspoken nature and close links to opposition politics have made him a familiar figure among many young Kenyans.
