Sifuna Row Exposes ODM Power Struggles Over Deputy President Slot

Fresh tensions within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) have brought to light an intense internal battle, with reports suggesting that a section of the party is eyeing the Deputy President position—fueling divisions and raising questions about the party’s future direction.

At the center of the unfolding drama is Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, whose recent اختلافات with fellow party members have exposed deep cracks within the once tightly controlled political outfit.

What initially appeared to be a disagreement over strategy has now evolved into a broader contest for influence, with different factions pushing competing agendas.

The core issue revolves around power and positioning within Kenya’s shifting political landscape.

Some ODM leaders reportedly support the idea of the party taking up the Deputy President slot, especially amid speculation about changes within government ranks.

To them, this represents a strategic opportunity to gain influence and secure development benefits for their supporters.

However, not everyone within ODM agrees. A significant faction fears that aligning too closely with the government could erode the party’s identity as a leading opposition force.

These concerns have been amplified by Sifuna’s stance, which insiders say has unsettled colleagues and intensified the internal “power play.”

The dispute also signals a broader succession debate within the party, long associated with Raila Odinga.

As new alliances emerge under the so-called “broad-based government” approach, attention is shifting from loyalty to legacy toward who stands to benefit politically in the coming years.

On the ground, supporters are increasingly uneasy. ODM has built its reputation on discipline and unity, but the current public disagreements suggest that internal cohesion is under strain.

While some members welcome closer cooperation with the ruling establishment as a pragmatic move, others warn that the party risks being absorbed and losing its distinct voice.

Political analysts view the situation as an early sign of the high-stakes calculations ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Securing the Deputy President slot could significantly reshape ODM’s influence at the national level—but it may also come at the cost of internal unity.
