According to the report, Kenyan universities featured in five subject areas overall: Business and Economics, Life Sciences, Medical and Health, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences.
In four of these categories, the University of Nairobi emerged ahead of Kenyatta University at the national level.
UoN topped the country in Business and Economics, Medical and Health, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences, cementing its reputation as Kenya’s leading research-driven university. Kenyatta University, however, retained its strength in Life Sciences, where it ranked above UoN.
The rankings underscore the growing competition between the two institutions, which remain Kenya’s most visible players on the global academic stage.

How the Rankings Are Compiled
Times Higher Education subject rankings are based on a rigorous and transparent methodology that blends reputation surveys with quantitative performance data.
Universities are assessed on several indicators, including teaching quality, research volume and impact, citation influence, staff-to-student ratios, industry income, and international collaboration. Institutions are also evaluated on knowledge transfer, patents, and third-party research funding.
THE noted that the weight assigned to each indicator varies by discipline to reflect differences in academic culture, research practices, and professional expectations across fields.
Implications for Kenyan Universities
Education experts say the rankings highlight both progress and persistent challenges within Kenya’s higher education sector.

Implications for Kenyan Universities
Education experts say the rankings highlight both progress and persistent challenges within Kenya’s higher education sector.
While UoN’s strong showing reinforces its status as a national academic leader, the absence of Kenyan universities in several globally competitive disciplines points to the need for increased investment in research infrastructure, faculty development, and international partnerships.
The results also renew debate on government funding for public universities and the need to align academic programmes with global research standards.
