Multi-Million Property Destroyed as Fire Razes Roadside Businesses

A massive fire broke out along Jogoo Road, close to Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD), on Thursday night, January 22, 2026, leaving several businesses in ruins and causing widespread panic among nearby residents.

Eyewitnesses reported that the blaze started at around 9 pm near the Mogas petrol station, quickly spreading to adjacent shops in the densely populated commercial area.

Footage shared on social media showed large crowds gathering at the scene as the fire intensified.

Some individuals were seen rushing to salvage their belongings, while others stood at a safe distance, watching the inferno engulf properties along the roadside.

The rapid spread of the fire raised immediate concerns due to the proximity of the petrol station, which could have resulted in a catastrophic explosion.

Firefighters from the Nairobi County Disaster Management Department arrived swiftly and managed to contain the blaze before it could spread further.

Emergency responders worked tirelessly to secure the area, cordoning off the site and advising residents and motorists to maintain a safe distance.

The exact extent of the damage remains unclear, and authorities are yet to release information regarding any injuries or fatalities.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire, with initial reports indicating that it may have originated from electrical faults or flammable materials stored near the shops.

This incident is not isolated, as Nairobi has witnessed a series of mysterious fires affecting commercial properties in recent months.

Just two weeks prior, a fire broke out along Luthuli Avenue near the Munyu Road junction, destroying property worth millions of shillings.

Both incidents have heightened public concern over fire safety measures and the need for stricter building and electrical inspections in the city.

The Kenya Red Cross confirmed that its Red Cross Action Team (RCAT) had been deployed to support emergency operations on Jogoo Road.

Their role included assisting affected business owners, providing temporary support, and helping authorities manage the safety of residents in the surrounding area.

Local authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols, especially in commercial areas where flammable materials are present.

They also encouraged business owners to install fire safety equipment and ensure that electrical systems are regularly inspected to prevent future incidents.

The fire has sparked discussions among Nairobi residents and business communities regarding urban planning and emergency response readiness.

Many argue that narrow streets and poorly maintained electrical lines contribute significantly to such disasters, making prompt intervention by fire services critical in densely populated zones.

While the focus remains on containment and assessing losses, authorities have promised a thorough investigation to identify the cause and hold responsible parties accountable.

Meanwhile, affected businesses face a challenging road to recovery, with some owners reporting total loss of stock and infrastructure.

Residents and commuters are advised to avoid the affected area until the emergency operations conclude and the site is deemed safe.
