RIP: Last Painful Words Kisii Businessman Told His Son Before He Was Killed at Ruto's Rally

A 97-year-old businessman from Kisii County has died after being caught in a stampede following a political rally attended by President William Ruto at Egetuki Centre.

The deceased, identified as Mzee Ombui Orandi, had left his home in Biyonge village on the morning of April 15, 2026, as part of his daily routine.

Despite his age, he regularly walked about three kilometres to Egetuki Centre, where he spent much of his day.

On this occasion, family members said he was particularly eager to attend the event because the president was scheduled to visit the area.

According to his son, Francis Nyabuto Ombui, he met his father on the way to the centre, where the elderly man told him he wanted to see President Ruto.

Later that day, the family received information that he had been found lying unconscious near the gate of the Kenya Medical Training College Gucha campus, where the event was held.

President Ruto had visited the area to commission the KMTC Gucha campus, launch the construction of the Sameta Egetuki Ikoba road, and inspect the ongoing Egetuki Modern Market project as part of the government’s development agenda.

Witnesses said that after the president concluded his address and left the venue, residents remained behind amid reports that cash would be distributed by the area member of parliament.

This led to a rush at the KMTC gate, where a crowd surge occurred.

Family members reported that the elderly man, who had a hearing impairment, was unable to react quickly as people pushed toward the entrance.

He fell during the commotion and was trampled by the crowd.

He was later taken to Ogembo Hospital, where attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

The body was subsequently moved to Ogembo mortuary as burial preparations began.

The family has appealed for financial support to assist with funeral arrangements.

The incident was reported at Ogembo Police Station, and authorities have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death.

Area Member of Parliament Alpha Miruka expressed sympathy to the family, noting that the incident occurred away from where he was distributing money.

Several other people were reportedly injured during the chaos, although the exact number has not yet been confirmed.
