ODM Rift Deepens as Orengo Rejects Reconciliation Talks, Exposes Growing Party Divide

Tensions within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) have escalated sharply after Siaya Governor James Orengo reportedly dismissed ongoing efforts to reconcile rival factions within the party.

The internal dispute has widened into a clear split between two camps that are now shaping ODM’s post–Raila Odinga political identity ahead of the 2027 General Election.

On one side is the faction aligned with the “Linda Mwananchi” movement, associated with leaders such as Edwin Sifuna, Babu Owino, and Godfrey Osotsi.

This group has been pushing for a more confrontational stance toward the government, emphasizing grassroots mobilization, accountability, and cost-of-living protests.

On the other side, the “Linda Ground” faction, linked to leaders like Oburu Oginga and Gladys Wanga, is advocating for stability, dialogue, and political cooperation as a strategy for maintaining influence in national governance structures.

Reports indicate that Orengo dismissed reconciliation efforts in strong terms, likening the situation to a broken relationship that cannot easily be repaired.

His remarks have been interpreted as a signal that the ideological and strategic divide within ODM may be too deep for simple mediation.

The exchange underscores a broader generational and ideological struggle within the party. Younger leaders are increasingly pushing for direct engagement with the electorate and a firmer opposition stance, while senior figures are more inclined toward negotiation and coalition-building.

Some analysts warn that the ongoing rift could have significant electoral consequences, particularly in Nyanza, a region traditionally considered ODM’s stronghold. A divided party, they argue, risks splitting its support base and weakening its influence in the 2027 race.

Supporters on both sides remain divided, with each faction accusing the other of weakening ODM’s cohesion at a critical political moment. The absence of a unifying figure comparable to Raila Odinga has further complicated efforts to restore unity.
