Susan Kihika and Gachagua Trade Sharp Accusations as Nakuru Politics Turns Hostile

Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua have locked horns in a bitter public exchange that has escalated political tensions in the county, drawing national attention to allegations of intimidation, misuse of police authority, and personal vendettas ahead of the 2027 political season.

The standoff erupted after Gachagua claimed his political activities in Nakuru were deliberately disrupted by police officers acting under the influence of the governor’s spouse, businessman Sam Mburu.

The accusations were met with a swift and fiery response from Governor Kihika, who dismissed the claims as false, malicious, and politically motivated.
Kihika Accuses Gachagua of Blackmail

In a strongly worded statement shared on her official social media platforms, Kihika accused Gachagua of previously attempting to blackmail her husband under the guise of what she described as a “protection fee.”

The governor suggested that the former deputy president’s recent outbursts were driven by personal grudges rather than genuine concerns about governance.

According to Kihika, her husband had declined to engage in business dealings proposed by Gachagua in the past, a decision she implied may have triggered the ongoing hostility.

She alleged that these overtures included attempts to involve Mburu in commercial ventures, which were firmly rejected.

The governor further accused Gachagua of using public rallies to launch personal attacks instead of offering policy alternatives or articulating a vision for the country. She questioned his focus on her family rather than addressing issues affecting citizens.
Police Roadblock Sparks Controversy

The exchange followed an incident in which Gachagua’s convoy was reportedly blocked by police while attempting to enter parts of Nakuru County for a political meeting.

Gachagua claimed that several police vehicles were deployed to stop his entourage, preventing him from addressing supporters at a trading centre near the county border.

He alleged that senior police officers in Nakuru were acting on instructions from individuals outside the formal chain of command, raising concerns about the politicisation of law enforcement.

Gachagua went as far as accusing the national police leadership of failing to assert authority over officers in the region.

“These actions undermine democracy and the constitutional right of leaders to freely engage with citizens,” Gachagua said, insisting that he had notified authorities in advance about his visit.
Governor Defends Nakuru’s Stability

In response, Governor Kihika defended the county’s leadership and security apparatus, insisting that Nakuru remains open to all political actors regardless of affiliation.

However, she cautioned against what she termed inflammatory rhetoric and incitement, warning that such conduct could threaten the county’s peace.

Kihika emphasized that Nakuru is a cosmopolitan county with diverse communities and does not tolerate divisive or tribal politics. She insisted that political engagement must be conducted responsibly and within the bounds of the law.

“The politics of insults and intimidation has no place here,” she said, adding that leaders must be held accountable for their words and actions.
Political Analysts Weigh In

Political observers say the public spat reflects rising tensions as political realignments begin to take shape ahead of the next general election.

Nakuru, a key political battleground, has increasingly become a focal point for power struggles among national leaders seeking to consolidate influence.

Analysts warn that continued public confrontations between senior leaders risk eroding public confidence in institutions, particularly when allegations involve the security sector.

They have called on independent oversight bodies to investigate the claims to establish facts and prevent further escalation.
Calls for Accountability and Calm

Civil society groups have urged restraint from both sides, emphasizing the importance of respecting democratic norms and the independence of state institutions.

They argue that allegations involving police interference should be addressed through formal channels rather than social media exchanges.
