Former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has cast doubt on claims that the massive crowd at Rigathi Gachagua’s rally in Karatina, Nyeri County, was spontaneous.
Speaking on his official Facebook page on Saturday, January 24, 2026, Wambugu suggested that significant mobilisation efforts, possibly involving monetary contributions, were behind the large turnout.
Wambugu, who was previously an ally of Gachagua but has since become a political rival, dismissed attempts by Gachagua’s supporters to portray the rally as “organic.”
He hinted that politicians aspiring to vie for political seats in 2027 through the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) may have contributed funds to mobilise attendees.
According to Wambugu, these aspirants might also have been assigned specific crowd targets to meet for the event.
“Until you realize how much money aspirants had to contribute for mobilisation & the crowd targets they had to bring on site,” he stated, suggesting a highly organised effort behind the scenes.
Despite these allegations, Gachagua’s rally in Karatina drew significant crowds, with the DCP leader using the platform to criticise President William Ruto and his allies.
During the event, Gachagua stated that his visit aimed to “cleanse the area” following the head of state’s recent tour of Nyeri.
He seized the opportunity to rally support for his political agenda, calling on citizens to unite in the fight for justice, equality, and improved access to social services such as healthcare and education.
Following the rally, Gachagua shared photos from the event on his official social media accounts, thanking Karatina residents for their “warm reception” and expressing optimism about the country’s future.
He emphasised the need for unity and change, stating:
“The people of Karatina have spoken in one solid voice; it is time for real change and liberation of our nation. God bless you, God bless Kenya!”
